Serving others, serving Christ

Ah, yes, I'm back! It's nice to be home, and sitting here blogging! ;)

Where have I been? Well, I've been away with my class for 2 weeks, helping out people who live in towns like Broken Hill and Swan Hill, and we also helped a farmer who owns a MASSIVE sheep farm. Surprisingly enough, though, during the 2-day stay we had at Turlee Station (the sheep farm), I didn't see a single sheep!! :) Ironic, isn't it? Apparently there were 7000 sheep and 4000 lambs, but I didn't see any!

Anyway, being away for that time, and helping so many people (which we got in that town's local paper for!) made me realise how much a couple of hours of weeding, or mowing, or cleaning up means to some people. We just did the little jobs that they'd never get around to doing, the ones that took us about 2hrs, and would have taken them a week. But even though we didn't do anything really amazing, the people we did it for were so thankful, and so appreciative. It was like we'd just handed them a million dollars, instead of just weeding their backyard. (well, maybe they weren't QUITE that excited, but they were pretty happy!)

Don't worry, I'm not trying to say "oh, look how good my class is, look what we've done" or anything. I'm just thinking, before I went on my Tour (my class trip to help people), how much did I think about helping people or how much they appreciate me helping them. Sure, I helped people. Sure, they said thank you. But I never stopped and thought about exactly how I could help people more. I didn't often step outside of my little "me, me, me" world, to help people. I did, but not very often. Any why should we help people? So that they can owe us something in return? Nope. So we can feel good about ourselves when we've finished? Nope.
Well, why? To show God's glory in everything we do? To help the people that God created? To love our neighbours as ourselves? YES, YES and YES!!! Those are the reasons! To reflect the Light of Jesus, to accompany our faith with deeds (check out James 2:14-26), to love our neighbours as ourselves (Matthew 22:39), and to honour God, our Heavenly Father, our Dad. Remember, when you're serving others, you're serving Christ (Matthew 25:31-46).

So that's what I've been thinking about recently. Maybe you'd like to think about it, too. How can YOU serve other better? Why are you serving others? For your own personal gain? Or for God's?

Have a lovely God-serving day.

I'll Be Back Soon....

That reminds me of a song... You might not know it. My school is doing "Oliver!" (you know, Oliver Twist?) for our musical this year, and one of the songs is called "Be Back Soon". Anyway, so that's my post title.

Why? Where am I going? Well, remember how I went on a 2-week hike through the mountains a little while ago? Now, I'm going on a nother school camp, but this one is to the desert for 11 days. We will be helping communities and doing jobs and things for them.I leave on Monday. Today's Friday (Friday, gotta get down on Friiii-da-ay!! haha), but I probably won't get a chance to post again until I get back. Not with all the packing and things I have to do. So I thought I'd just let you know why I'm not posting for a while. My friend, Emii, (some of you might have read her blog. If you haven't, check it out here) is coming too, so she won't be writing for a while, either....

While we are away, your prayers would be gratefully appreciated. I'll be praying for you, as well. :)
And I'll miss you (even though I don't personally know you!).

Have an awesome (almost) 2 weeks, and I'll post again when you get back. If you would like, check out John 14:22-25 while I'm away and tell me what you think... I studied it at Bible Syudy last night, and it's a hard one.

Have fun! :)

Love, Bess x

P.S. Don't have too much fun without me! ;)

random bits of nothing

Don't worry. I know. I haven't posted for, what? 6 days? Something like that. Anyway, I didn't not post on purpose! Don't hate me! :) I've been to my blog nearly every day since I last posted, but when I go to sign in, it goes "Sorry, blogger is not available" and so on and so forth. Yeah, I know. I should probably get a new computer -- preferably one that doesn't go on holidays to the computer shop and not let me get onto my own blog!

So, I don't really know what to post about now that I'm actually on here. Maybe I'll just talk about random bits of nothing... (hey, that sound suspiciously like my post title! Weird coincidence, huh? :P) So, here goes!

Random nothing #1: My Word-of-the-Day today was (oh no! it washed off my hand. what was it? think! think!) um... got it! (thank you dictionary.com!) Pejorative. It means deragotory or rude.

Random nothing #2: Justin Bieber's middle name is Drew. (that was one from my older sister!)

Random nothing #3: A group of owls is called a parliament. Weird, huh?

Random nothing #4: E=mc2 (yeah, that's right, Eintstein actually stole that from me, I figured it out first!! :P)

Random nothing #5: Ring-a-ring-o'-roses (you know, that game where you dance in a circle?) is actually about the Black Death (or Black Plaugue, whichever you prefer), and the falling down part is about people dying! How sad is that? A little kids' song is about death! :(

Random nothing #6: How about something less morbid now?? Hmm... ok, did you know that Thomas Edison's real name was Barton Lewis.

Random nothing #7: Dogs sweat out of their feet. (Now, I'm not TOTALLY sure about this one. I'm 95% sure).

Random nothing #8: Did you know that I made number 6 up completely? tehehe! You fell for it, didn't you? ;)

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my random nothings (You probably didn't!) But even if you didn't, I had fun writing them for you. :) I hope this post hasn't put you off reading my blog. Don't worry, not all my posts are this brainless!!

Hoping you have a fun day, filled with random nothings (let me know if you get one!)

A day of grey

Yeah, i know, it rhymes. Makes it sound a bit corny doesn't it? Oh well, that's beside the point! :)

Today is one of those days. You know, those days when the sky's cloudy and grey and there's an occasional shower of frustrating-rain. Frustrating-rain is when the rain is too heavy to be a sprinkling that makes your hair sparkly, and too light to be a downpour that you can dance in. Not that you couldn't dance in it, but it's waaaaay more fun to dance in a downpour that gets you drenched and giggling within 5 seconds [I know, it's lame, but that's me! And surely I'm not the only one who likes dancing in the rain? You secretly love it, don't you?! :P ]. Yep. Today is one of THOSE days.

Usually on THOSE days, I wake up and go "ugh". Especially if I have to go to school. But, I'm working on being thankful for everything and finding the good in everything. Even on THOSE days. And also, I need to remember that God made today -- and every other one of the THOSE days (I'm getting pretty sick of writing "THOSE days". Anyone got a suggestion of a better name for them?) -- especially for us, long long before it came to be, in the days before forever ago.

So what is there to be thankful for in today? Well, there's that little patch of sunshine peeking through some of the clouds... and look!! There's some blue sky! Thank you, God.
But aside from the weather, there are so many other things to be thankful for. For example, I'm alive today aren't I? That's always good. :) It sounds silly but -- not meaning to be morbid here -- I could die tomorrow. So remember to thank God for your life!
What else? Well, there're flowers outside my window. Simple, yet wonderful.
There are so many things to be thankful for. And not just in the good things. Everything has some good in it (well, except for sin, but you get the idea).

It does sound kinda corny, y'know, like that song. The one that goes "Oh, be thankful for the googd things that you've got. Oh, be thankful for the good things that you've got. For the good things that you've got are for many...." Sorry, got a bit carried away. :)
But, corny doesn't always mean bad. In fact, most corny lines or puns usually have a good meaning behind it [like my post title, maybe? ;) ] It's true, it's a pretty corny song. In fact, the first time I heard in [in grade 2!], I came home and told mum how funny (and maybe slightly lame!) it was. Well, she told me that it was good, and all the reasons why. I understand now. Thanks Mum. And it is true. We should be thankful.

So that's my insight into all things thankful. Well, maybe not ALL things! ;) Hopefully it was helpful, in some way.

Thursday 5 May 2011

Well, I'm back!

Yeah, yeah, i know, i haven't posted for about a month and half. Pretty un-dedicated of me, since i only started this blog about-- think quick, Bessie!-- 3 months ago.
But don't worry! I haven't stopped writing for good! And i have reasonably good excuses for not posting. :)

1. I went on a 2 week hike (no computers in the Australian Alps!)
2. My computer got a virus and went to live at the computer-fixing shop for a while
3. My computer came home, went bizarre, and went for another holiday in the computer shop
4. My computer came home-- AGAIN!-- and it wouldn't let me go on my blog. (i know, it's cruel world, isn't it?)

So, those are my (not-so) amazing excuses for not posting. I'll probably post either tomorrow or the next day, hopefully about something more substantial than this! ;)

Until then, i hope you'll forgive me, and have a wonderful whatever-time-of-day you're having!!

We can do anything (with a bit of help!)

I'm about to fall asleep and it's only 4:20 in the afternoon! :) So, this post could make no sense whatsoever. (Does anyone else LOVE that word? Whatsoever? How awesome is it!?)

Anyways.... so i was thinking today about a Bible verse. I don't know where it's from, and I don't knwo if I know the whole verse, but here it is: "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." I love that verse. It's so simple, and yet so powerful. And it's so true!

How crazy is it that the One who DIED for us, us; the small insignificant people on the tiny blue dot that never listen to the Creator of the Universe, still wants to help us, even after he did so much for, even as much as to offer up his life! That's just -- wow! I don't even know how to describe that. Crazy!

So, we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength! That is cool. :) Anything? We can do ANYTHING! That means we can reach out to the entire world (through Christ who gives us strength), we can end world poverty (through Christ who gives us strength), we can hike up mountains for 2 weeks (through Christ who gives us strength).... we can do absolutetly ANYTHING! Just ask and it shall be given to you!

Like that other verse (don't know where it's from) says: "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you."
So, all we need to do is belive in Jesus, and we get all these bonus things. Gifts of Grace. Pretty cool, huh? So, believe, ask, recieve.

Remember, we can do anything through Christ!

On Mission

So, over the weekend, I was away on my church camp. It was very fun. :)
That's not what I'm writing about, though. On the camp, we had 3 Bible studies. They were about being "on mission" and having a "mission lifestyle". That basically means how we can be missionaries for God, and how our whole lives can be (and should be) a mission for God.
One of the studies was completely focused on how we can use the internet for mission, and for spreading the Gospel. It really stuck out to me that having this blog is one way I can be a reflection of Jesus' Light in the world. This is one way I can reach out.
OK, so I'm not the most amazing at words. I'm not a preacher. I don't know everything about the Bible. But I can still be a witness for Jesus. So can you.
Even though we're not going off to be missionaries in Africa (well, I'm not, you might be! Comment and tell me if you are, coz that's great!), we can still be a witness to others.
Think John 5:14-16 -- "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise you Father in Heaven."
So, come on, girls. Let's be lamps, lights and candles! And think about it... one or two candles in a dark room aren't going to do much, are they? But a hundred? A thousand? A MILLION?? Yeah, that'd make it pretty bright! Let's light the candles! ;)

So, what's going to be your "mission"? Is your lifestyle a mission lifestyle? I don't know if mine is, but, with God's help, I hope it will be soon!

Have a wonderfully mission-filled day!

Wednesday 9 March 2011

tired, sore, stiff. . . and still joyful :)

Wow! I cannot believe I made it!
Yesterday, I came back from a 2-day hike. It may not seem that hard, but when you're hiking up (almost) vertical hills and sliding down the other side, with a 16kg pack on (that's broken, and so hurts more than it needs to!), all the while battling march flies and mosquitos, it is very hard!
I am still amazed that I am home. I made it! I was so sore and tired and dirty while we were walking. I nearly died on one hill... I just wanted to be home, not walking, in my own bed, and CLEAN!!
On every mountain, I wanted to give up. I just wanted to flop down and cry. I wanted to suddenly wake up and be at home in my bed. But I didn't. There were so many moments when I was on the verge of giving up, but then God would suddenly send me a burst of energy, and I'd make it to the top of the mountain. Sometimes I'd pray for it, but others, He just sent it. The burst of energy would come in different forms as well. God is very creative. Sometimes, it would just be me telling myself to suck it up and keep walking! :) Sometimes it was someone else telling me I could do it, I was nearly there. Other times it would be someone making me laugh, or just talking to me. However it came, it helped me to get to the top, so that was fantastic! :D
Thank you, Lord Jesus. You got me home!

So, girls, whenever you want to give up, call it quits or break down and cry, look to God, call out for help, and He'll get you through it. Isn't that awesome?? He helps us out whenever we need it. Remember: "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." I've forgotten where that's from though... does anyone know?

You have my prayers as you face whatever struggles await you.

A smiling thought :)

Well, if you've read my friend Emii's blog today, you'd notice that her post title is similar to hers! That's not because I'm copying... it's because we had a smiling moment together today! :) It was nice... if you want to know what it was, check out Emii's blog...

Anyway, i like smiling moments, they're better than the "ahhh" moment! ;)

It seems like they are so rare, a moment when you just want stop everything and smile. Usually I end up doing just that (and usually end up looking just a bit goofy!).

So, i was thinking, why are they so rare? I mean, we smile all the time, but sometimes you just get a smiling moment and feel so happy and content, you don't feel like you could ever be sad again. Why can't we have that all the time? It would be be challenging to try and be happy all the time, wouldn't it? How would you go?

It's like 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says... "Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." Good verse, huh? Smiling moments made me think about that verse. (I had to look it up, though, i couldn't rememeber it!)

I'm making that a challenge for you (and me, actually! It'll be hard!), to do a 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. Tell me how you go... I hope you get something out of this, I know I will! ;)

Have a wonderful day/night/afternoon/whatever you are having! :D

Tuesday 1 March 2011

autumn. . .

Well, it's the season we've all been dreading! At least I have! ;)
Welcome to Autumn (or fall, if you live in the US), the season where I can never decide what to wear! Does anyone else get that problem? It'll be raining in the morning, so I wear my warm woolies (translation: warm clothing), and by 2 o'clock in the afternoon (Ahhh! My cat, Alfred, just jumped on the keyboard!), it'll be jump-in-the-pool-in-your-clothes weather! Even if it's not autumn where you are, you can still comment with your sympathy for us Aussie girls! So, my advice for those of you who are braving the season with me, always take a change of clothes! :)
But there are so many good things about Autumn, too. I love the colours of the leaves, especially when they go purple! I love jumping on crunchy leaves, and racing my friends to the best ones. Yes, it may sound like I'm about 4, but I LOVE crunching leaves! :) So, next time you see a crunchy leaf, jump on it for me, ok? And then comment and tell me how much fun you had! ;)

Random topic change: Guess what! I now have 8 followers! I'm very excited! I'm aiming to get at least 10 (preferably more) by the end of the week, so tell your friends!! Actually, they may not want to read my random writing! :S ha ha

So, I hope you had a fabulous first-day-of-Autumn (which is also my sister's birthday!), and enjoy tomorrow as well!

verse to think about...

Hey girls....
I was reading this verse today, and I thought I'd share it with you, coz it was a good one. :)
"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice, and opens up the door, I will come in, and eat with him, and he with me."
I don't know why, but it stood out to me today.
So, here I am, Jesus... my door's open wide, so come on in!

Anyone else have any stand-out verses today?

Love, Bess.

the "ahhhh" moment

Does anyone else get the "ahhhh" moment? Or am I just crazy? ;)
The "ahhh" moment (let's call it T.A.M) is when you get home from school/work/etc (in my case, school), you've put your bag away, you sit down and you just go "ahhhh". The bad thing about the ahhhh moment is that it only lasts a second. After that one second of pure relaxation, you suddenly remember that you have an assignment due the next day, a dog to walk, a 5 page essay to write, and about 17 other things that need doing before you wake up tomorrow.
I had T.A.M today. It was wonderful, then it was terrible. My brain went "ahh!", then it went "nooooo!".
So, am I weird, or does everyone else get this, too? Comment and tell me... I don't want to be alone in my weird-ness! :)

Anyway, thank you very muchly to my new followers (for, uh, following me!). And especially thank you to Emii, for mentioning my blog on your blog...
And, hopefully I'll get more followers soon. :)

Have a wonderful night/day/whatever is is! ;)

Love, Bess

Friday 25 February 2011

A great day for firsts!

A great day for firsts? Well, this is my first blog, my first post, and if you're reading this, you're probably the first to do that! I don't really know what I'm doing, as you can probably tell from the boring background, and the not-much going on, but I'll work on it! If you are reading this, thanks for "coming", and I hope you'll be back! :)

Anyway, since it's my first post, I'll introduce myself. My name is Bess, and I live in Australia. For those of you who aren't Aussie girls (or boys, but I'm guessing that no boys will be reading this!), no, I don't have a pet kangaroo, eat barbeques for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and walk around saying "G'day, mate" to everyone I see! Even though those things aren't true, Australia is still a pretty awesome country!
I go to school, and have fantastic friends. My family are great as well. As for pets, I have a dog, a cat, seven chickens, two ducks and 6 sheep.
I love reading, writing, playing my guitar, eating chocolate, watching thunder storms, drawing, watching movies after a long school week, hanging out with my friends and family, and Jesus.
Yep, out of all the things I love, Jesus is absolutely the best.

I'll write more another day... right now I have to go. :(
Thanks again for reading (don't worry, it should get more interesting as time goes on!)

Love, Bess. :D
